Marine Academy Commandant Sajid Hussain’s service extended
Government has extended the service of the Commandant of Bangladesh Marine Academy ‘Chartered Marine Engineer Dr. Sajid Hussain’ by two more years (Oct 2021 – Sep 2023) as per an order of the Ministry of Public Administration on 11 October 2021. He is serving as the Commandant since 2009. Prior to the current position, he had served the Academy during 1993-2009 (Sr. Engineer Instructor, Chief Engineer and Deputy Commandant) and Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) during 1980-1993 from Cadet Engineer to Chief Engineer in ocean-going ships.
Internationally, he is also an IMO (UN) Maritime Ambassador, a Governor at World Maritime University (Sweden)’s Board of Governors, Maritime Expert of IMO (UN) & GlobalMET (Australia), Chartered Engineer of UK Engineering Council and a Trustee, Council Member, Fellow & Chartered Marine Engineer of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST London).
He has regimental backgrounds from Rajshahi Cadet College (SSC 1976 – 3rd position & HSC 1978 – star marks) and from Bangladesh Marine Academy (1978-80 – 2nd position) and was the Chief Cadet Captain of the Academy in 1980. He has achieved CoC Class ONE Marine Engineer from UK, MSc in Maritime Safety Administration (Marine Engineering) of World Maritime University, Sweden and a DSc in Maritime Education (Honoris Causa).
Son of two valiant Freedom Fighter & Parliament Member parents, Sajid Hussain was one of the youngest Freedom Fighters of the country at age 12 in Modhupur Muktijodhdha Camp in Sector-7. He has authored 23 books (liberation war, IT, science fiction and literature), 30 Research papers and over 250 features and achieved ‘Outstanding Contribution to Marine Education Award 2018’ from IMarEST London in 2019.
During 2009-2019, he led enhancing the Academy from ‘Traditional to Digital’ with e-Learning; procured a navigation simulator, upgraded the Cadets’ Bachelor of Maritime Science 3-years’ PASS degree course into 4-years’ HONOURS course in 2015 in affiliation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU); introduced Female Cadets in sea-profession in 2012, introduced MSc in Maritime Science in 2018 in collaboration with BSMRMU. He led establishing BSMRMU during 2001-2013 basing on his WMU Sweden MSc thesis titled ‘A Proposal for Establishment of a Maritime University in Bangladesh’ and in 2010-19 4 New Marine Academies (Rangpur, Pabna, Barishal & Sylhet).
Commandant Sajid has enriched the Academy with various international statuses like Partnering Status with World Maritime University, Sweden (2019), recognition of UK Merchant Navy Training Board (2019) and recognition of IMarEST London & NI London (2019), South Asian Business Award (2017), ISO 9001:2015 from DNV-GL (2016), recognition of MPA Singapore (2015), MOU with WMU Sweden (2014), recognition of EU EMSA (2011), link with Dalian Maritime University China, Vietnam Maritime University and Singapore Maritime Academy in 2011 and with Australian Maritime College in 2010.
His ongoing initiatives include (1) MoU with Southampton Solent University, UK, (2) recognition of UK MCA, (3) MoU with Maritime Academy of Asia & Pacific, Philippines and (4) procuring a full-mission simulator from Korea.
